# Narya environment variables

> The environment variables that the Narya host and the narya command read, with each default and what it changes.

Narya reads these variables from the environment of the process that runs it: the host, or the `narya` command that you type. Every variable is optional.

## Home

| Variable | Default | What it does |
| :- | :- | :- |
| `NARYA_HOME` | `$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/narya`, else `~/.config/narya` | The Narya home: the store, the socket, `config.toml`, your permission rules and the credentials directory. A relative path resolves against the working directory. |
| `XDG_CONFIG_HOME` | — | When `NARYA_HOME` is not set, the home is `$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/narya`. |

## Models

| Variable | Default | What it does |
| :- | :- | :- |
| `<PROVIDER>_API_KEY` | — | This machine's key for a provider, such as `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY`, `OPENAI_API_KEY` or `OPENROUTER_API_KEY`. It wins over the keychain and the credentials file on every read. See [Models and credentials](https://docs.lerian.studio/en/platform/narya/models-and-credentials.md#where-your-key-comes-from). |
| `NARYA_MODELS_URL` | `https://models.dev/api.json` | The model catalog that the host reads every 12 hours. `off` stops that read and the model listing of each provider. |

## Environments

| Variable | Default | What it does |
| :- | :- | :- |
| `NARYA_SANDBOX_IMAGE` | — | The container image of the environments. Without it, the host provisions no environment. The image must already be on the Docker daemon. |
| `DOCKER_HOST` | `unix:///var/run/docker.sock` | The Docker daemon that runs the environments. Narya reads only a `unix://` address, and it uses the default for any other value. |

## Telemetry and logs

These variables win over the `[telemetry]` and `[logging]` tables of `config.toml`.

| Variable | Default | What it does |
| :- | :- | :- |
| `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT` | — | The OpenTelemetry collector, as `host:port`, with an optional `http://` or `https://`. Setting it turns telemetry on. Narya sends to an `http://` endpoint without TLS and to an `https://` endpoint with TLS. |
| `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_INSECURE` | `false` | With `true`, Narya sends without TLS to a `host:port` endpoint that has no `http://` or `https://`. With `true` and an `https://` endpoint, Narya does not start. |
| `OTEL_TRACES_SAMPLER_ARG` | `1` | The share of traces that Narya sends, above `0` and at most `1`. |
| `OTEL_SERVICE_NAME` | Set by Narya | The name of the process in the collector. |
| `OTEL_SDK_DISABLED` | — | With `true`, telemetry is off, whatever the other settings say. |
| `LOG_LEVEL` | `info` | `debug`, `info`, `warn` or `error`. |
| `LOG_ENCODING` | `json` | `json` or `console`. |

## Terminal client

| Variable | Default | What it does |
| :- | :- | :- |
| `VISUAL`, `EDITOR` | — | The editor that the interactive client opens for a draft. Narya reads `VISUAL` first. |
