Stamps the moment a reader had this session in front of them. It is the watermark “what happened while you were away” is measured from: read against the session’s updatedAt, it answers whether anything has happened here since somebody looked. The fact lives on the host rather than in the client that called this, which is the whole point of the operation. Two windows open on one session then agree about what has been seen, and a client that quits and comes back reads the same answer instead of starting from zero — the failure that closes is a background conversation which finished overnight and showed nothing the next morning. It takes no body and is idempotent: a client acknowledges every time it brings a conversation to the front, so saying it twice is the ordinary case. The stamp is the host’s own clock, never a time the caller names — a client with a skewed clock would otherwise be able to declare activity read before it happened. An archived session is accepted: a conversation somebody retired and then read must be able to stop claiming news. Nothing else about the session moves, updatedAt included — a viewing is not something the conversation did, and bumping it would mark the session unread by the act of reading it.
